This course examines how farmers can manage soil and water in a sustainable way. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the methods used to minimise damage to soil structure, avoid soil erosion, and reduce water pollution.

The course can be used to contribute towards the BASIS Diploma in Agronomy.

The course is delivered over four days, using participatory lectures, field practicals, and group exercises from our Riseholme Campus, LN2 2LG.
The subject areas covered include the following:
- Properties of soils, including texture, structure and water relations.
- Soil organic matter
- Management of organic amendments
- Soil erosion.
- Protecting water resources.
- Managing drainage and irrigation systems.
- Managing field cultivations.

Delivery:
The course is delivered in four days, using participatory lectures, field practicals and group
exercises from our Riseholme Campus, LN2 2LG.

field practicals and group exercises from our Riseholme Campus, LN2 2LG.
The course is assessed by means of a short written exam (online), farm management plan, and vivas at our Riseholme Campus.
Successful candidates will also be awarded HE credits that can be used towards completion of the Harper Adams BASIS Diploma in Agronomy.
